Preston was always able to put the patient’s worries at ease. His calming and caring nature was such a perfect fit for this patient in his final stages of life.
As a nurse of 6 years, there have been many patients who have left a mark on my heart. Some are still thriving today, while others look down on me every day. In the last month, I had the pleasure of taking care of a patient, who has now passed, but I learned a lot from this patient. I also got to see the incredible impact nurses have on our most fragile patients and how we leave marks on our patients’ hearts. Taking care of a patient in their final stages of life is not an easy task, especially when that child is fully aware of what death is, and is beyond anxious about it. This sweet patient was blessed to have had Preston take care of him on multiple occasions, each of which left a huge mark on this patient’s heart.

While under Preston’s care, this patient expressed his anxiousness and nervousness about passing away. Preston is an extremely gifted nurse with a huge heart and was able to take these extremely difficult conversations and turn them into discussions about strength in oneself. Preston talked to the patient about his favorite superheroes, and how the patient himself, resembled a superhero. Preston was always able to put the patient’s worries at ease. His calming and caring nature was such a perfect fit for this patient in his final stages of life.

Preston was also cognizant of the difficult family stressors that played a part in this patient’s care. Preston always went above and beyond to ensure that the patient’s needs were met, one of which was facilitating phone calls between the patient and his family. This was always something that brought the patient so much joy, so Preston made sure it always happened in his care. Unfortunately, as the patient’s illness progressed, he got to a point where he was unaware of the people around him.

Preston got to hold this patient’s hand only a mere hours before he passed. Even though the patient was physically unaware of Preston’s presence, I know that if the patient could have picked one nurse to be with on the day he passed, it would be Preston. They had a special bond- one that I know Preston will never forget, but more importantly, one that I know this patient went to heaven remembering. Preston truly is an incredible nurse- one that I am so proud to call my coworker, my friend, and a superhero to the kids who need one most.
