I am a colleague of Shen Qunyan, whom patients always call "angel". She is a great patient advocate and always does her best to provide patients with the best care she can. Coming to work with a big smile on her face, Shen always performs at the highest level of care that a nurse can give, creating an environment to heal. I can never say enough about her. She is as great as the following story will illustrate!
One day in January 2014, a boy diagnosed with "mental retardation" was admitted to our unit. The boy was not very talkative and actually stayed quietly in a corner of the ward most of the time, not talking to anyone. Qunyan was his nurse during most of his hospital stay. Her patience with him was beyond extraordinary. She was very sensitive to the boy's needs and could give timely intervention. Even though the boy gave her no reply and would not look her in the eye, each day she explained everything to him, using simple words in order for him to understand. Qunyan was very busy when working, but she managed to make some extra time to talk with the little boy and encouraged him to express his feelings. Her hard work finally paid off when she gained the boy's trust and he began talking only to her but nobody else.
His illness made the boy very irritable and capricious. When he did not want to wash his dirty hands or take a shower, he would become very violent toward anyone who tried to approach him. However, Qunyan was not afraid of him or his violent actions when everyone else was. She said she persuaded him with love. She actually sat with him for some time and tried to understand how he felt without any judging or patronizing. At one point, she was "attacked" by the little boy, but still she used sanitized swabs to clean the dirt off his hands and provided the best care she could as if nothing happened. She was so caring, compassionate and considerate that the boy even cried and hugged her.
Qunyan always says, "Love always wins". She taught us to love each of our patients by doing so herself. She is truly our role model. Nursing is not just a job for her; it is more of a calling. She demonstrates what an excellent nurse looks like. I hope I can be half the professional someday that she is now. We are so proud to have a colleague like her.
