I have worked alongside many phenomenal nurses. When it comes to the area of compassion and leadership, one nurse rises above the rest - Rachael Neely.
For about 4 years, I have witnessed Rachael's compassion toward her patients regardless of the situation. Her leadership role as "Charge" serves Banner PICU a great service. Rachael strives for excellence and her willingness to help other staff members does not go unnoticed. Whether the staff is in a novice or experienced role, Rachael is always there to provide support.
Rachael has done many great things as an RN in the PICU at Banner Thunderbird, but one compassionate instance should not go without notice. There was a patient who was known to the unit scheduled for yet, another surgery. Rachael coordinated with Child Life to help ease the anxiety and fear she knew this patient would feel. Rachael took it upon herself to order bed sheets with her favorite superhero, Wonder Woman on them to have ready on her bed once she arrived for admission. She also coordinated with other staff members to have her room decorated with this same superhero. As if all of this was not enough Rachael, with the help of Child Life called in our very own "Wonder Woman" to walk her down to the Operating Room. The patient was ecstatic, and her parents were grateful for the extra effort that went in to help comfort their child. She went above and beyond the traditional role of nursing to provide this patient with comfort.
Note: This is Rachael's 2nd DAISY Award!
