She made us feel like he finally was not just another patient, another number, but was someone of value who deserved care.
My father was in the hospital for weeks. He was on ECMO, and we thought we were going to lose him multiple times throughout his stay. He had had a rough journey while in this unit, just based on his condition. It wasn't until we met Rachael Van Huis that we felt like a healthcare worker was talking to us about our loved one instead of a statistic. Rachael took care of our father for the weekend, and she was the biggest blessing we have met yet. Upon meeting her, she gave us confidence that our dad was in good hands with someone who not only knew her nursing but was also able to treat us like family. She continued to ask us questions about Dad. She got to know him on a personal level. She made us feel like he finally was not just another patient, another number, but was someone of value who deserved care. Most importantly, Rachael made us smile and laugh. She got my confused dad to laugh as well. She continued to joke around the room and talked to us like we were one of her friends or a family member. Even when my dad was confused and lashing out, she made light of the situation before us, which helped ease the nerves we had been holding onto for weeks. She not only took care of her patient but also took care of us, the family. When we called the second day to learn that Rachael was our nurse again, we were able to fall back asleep until the late afternoon. Knowing that our dad was in her hands gave us the peace of mind to let us take care of ourselves for the first time in weeks. And for that, we will be forever grateful.
