Racheal Berry, BSN, RN

Racheal Berry is an extraordinary nurse who is intelligent, thoughtful, and collaborates with other team members to meet family and patients' needs. As our UBC chair, she advocates for the care of our patients and the care of our nurses by putting forth positive changes and measurable outcomes for the good of our unit as well as the patient population in which she serves. We had a young patient in the MICU who was critically ill and was displaying drastic changes in vital signs. I witnessed how Racheal advocated for her patient to the ICU physician and other healthcare team members. She spoke out and made us understand that although the patient’s vital signs were not a textbook display of increased ICP, she believed, through her thorough and meticulous assessment, that was the issue. Her beliefs were confirmed by a head CT, and the patient received emergency interventions from neurosurgery and was transferred to our Neuro ICU. It is very important for the healthcare team to have somebody like Racheal who is always helping the rest of the healthcare team hear a patient’s voice when they can not speak for themselves. Without Racheal’s excellent assessment, the patient would not have received the care she needed. Advocating for patients comes naturally to her.
