It felt like I was being taken care of by my mother, my best friend, and a physician all at once.
I received excellent care during my recent visit, but one nurse was particularly outstanding. I had a very difficult time coming out of anesthesia following my hysterectomy. I was very sleepy and nauseous and was in recovery well beyond the typical timeline. At first, I thought Rachel was only assigned to me. Every time I woke up, she was at my side and checking in with me. It wasn't until much later that I realized she was also taking care of several other patients. When she was busy, I noticed that she made sure other nurses were checking in with me and keeping me as comfortable as possible. She managed the workload and patient recovery with a steady eye, was calm and collected the entire time, and was 100% lovely to everyone around her. As the evening progressed, she knew that I planned to fill my prescriptions at the hospital Walgreens. At this time of the night, I was very nauseous. She did everything she could to facilitate the filling of my order and made sure I was able to get my prescriptions before they closed. She wheeled me to the window before closing, helped me as I heaved into my bag, and kept me organized and functioning to pay and collect my prescription. This might sound like an easy task, but it was not. Lastly, I had a lot of trouble going to the bathroom which was my final hurdle before being discharged. She was communicating with my doctors as they negotiated my situation, and she would sprint to the telephone to not miss their calls. She set me up in the bathroom with warm cups of water to place my fingers in and used her cell phone to play sounds of running water for me. She checked in on me and was a champion for me. This simple gesture was helpful and effective. When I learned her shift was over, I had mixed feelings. I wanted her to rest and go home, but I also knew that my care wasn't going to be as amazing once she left. I have so much gratitude to Rachel for being such an attentive, compassionate, and skilled nurse. It felt like I was being taken care of by my mother, my best friend, and a physician all at once. I cannot thank her enough.
