During this episode, Rachel found a way to show compassion and act as if this was her son or a family member.
I’ve worked with Rachel Campos for many years in the SICU. It was not until recently I realized what a great nurse she is and how fortunate we are to have her taking care of our sick and critically ill patients. Rachel has all the great qualities that make an exceptional nurse. Skills and knowledge in critical care, caring for her patients and families with compassion and respect, leadership, mentorship, and as a team player.

Rachel and I were taking care of a critically ill patient that was fresh post-op from aortic repair from a stab wound. It was shortly after anesthesia left and the patient became hypotensive. He was intubated and sedated. We had to make some quick moves before he became severely hypotensive, organ damage, and or cardiac arrest. When we turned down the sedation to help the blood pressure, he became awake and agitated. And moving around. Now he was awake (agitated), hypotensive, coagulopathic, hypothermic, and bleeding from his abdominal wound vac. She stayed by the bed and was doing everything we needed to keep him alive. During this episode, she found a way to show compassion and act as if this was her son or a family member.

The patient survived and had made it out of the intensive care unit. Her incredible critical care skills played a crucial part in the initial hours. As we were working side by side with this patient she would talk to him, even though he was slipping in and out of consciousness, and assuring him that he was going to be all right.

There have been many times when I found her helping others when her fellow nurses were overwhelmed with work. This teamwork is what makes it possible for our patients to survive and prevent burnout. She is always there showing mentorship by helping out the new nurses, that don’t have the experience or knowledge while overseeing them for mistakes. I want to thank Rachel for who and what she does. It wasn’t till I worked in the SICU at LAC+USC, that I realized what exceptional nurses that I work with and how this makes a difference in our patients’ survival.

For the past 10 years, Ms. Campos has been working in the Surgical ICU, with the same enthusiasm that she had when she started. Ms. Campos has been not only a patient advocate but an advocate for her peers. Ms. Campos will take the time to discuss issues with management that pertain to the wellness of the members of the unit. Especially, if it is going to affect the work of the new staff. She works with management to find ways to avoid burnout, and frustration when they become overwhelmed in their new role as an RN. She guides, teaches new skills, and mentors as a lead, and works cohesively with all her colleagues on the team. Ms. Campos, has earned the respect of all the members of the unit, including the medical team, for her knowledge and respect towards everyone. She is a member of the team that everyone can truly count on. Thank you, Ms. Campos for all your hard work and dedication to SICU-5A, and all the contributions you have made in training your fellow colleagues to have the same passion and goals in caring for both our patients and staff, by working together as a team.
