Rachel is an excellent example of a professional, caring, and compassionate nurse! My aunt was a patient in the ICU at Miamisburg. Our family had to make the difficult decision to change my aunt's code status from a full code to a DNR-CC and wean her off life support. Although I am a nurse myself and work in a critical care environment at times, being on the other side of the fence with these types of situations is not easy. Rachel handled this situation with professionalism and grace. She laughed with us and cried with us. As nurses, we are sometimes looked at as weak when we show emotion, I would argue that showing emotion shows we care and that we share a connection with our patients and families. I sat beside my younger cousins when the doctor and Rachel were discussing the different code statuses. One phrase Rachel used that stuck with me was "If God chooses to take his angel sooner, we will make every effort to make your mom/aunt comfortable along the way." Rachel was our nurse on the day my aunt passed. Boy did she follow through with her statement! She went the extra mile to ensure my aunt and family were comfortable. She medicated her prior to extubation and administered medication to help relax her. She played soft soothing music and she would have appreciated this. She made a difficult situation pleasant and an experience my family and I will cherish forever! Rachel, thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
