Rachel is a very special person, a great nurse, and a kind and gentle soul.
It was Easter and Rachel Kiser was my nurse as I awaited my heart cath procedure. She was there in recovery when I came back from the procedure. My health began to fail, and my blood pressure was dropping. Rachel called for the doctor immediately, blood pressure steadily dropping, and another call to the doctor. When my blood pressure reached 60/30 I remember Rachel calling the doctor a third time asking him to please hurry back, because she was losing me. She began to pray over me asking the Lord not to take me. As she prepared to do chest compressions on me, I prayed with her.
Then the doctor came into the room and in a flash, we were returning to the operating room. The doctor kept saying, “stay with me”, he was inserting a tube into my chest, I had suffered a cardiac tamponade. Later that night I awoke in a different recovery room. I asked my wife to find Rachel and thank her. Sometime later that evening, she appeared at my bedside. Rachel played a big part in saving my life that day. I spent 15 days in the wonderful Baptist Health Hospital. A hospital that, in my opinion, is top-notch!
Rachel was my nurse on several occasions. All of the staff at Baptist Health from the housekeepers, nutritionists, nurse aides, phlebotomists, nurses, doctors, and all the others I failed to mention are so kind and compassionate and excel at their given profession. On the day of discharge, Rachel stopped by to see me off. Rachel is a very special person, a great nurse, and a kind and gentle soul.

We came to the Emergency Department and my husband was admitted with a heart attack and to have a heart cath the following day. We were brought to this room where we were very blessed to meet Rachel Kiser! To be honest, we were tired and hungry! After his medical needs were taken care of, Rachel appeared with turkey sandwiches and chips. It was like she knew what we needed without being told (that’s a gift). As we said grace over this wonderful meal, Rachel stopped what she was doing and bowed her head also! She had shown respect for us! My husband was scheduled for his heart cath on Easter and as we prayed before his procedure, Rachel joined in! Wow, what a blessing to my husband and me!
At this point, we were unaware of what an important role Rachel would play in our lives! After he returned from the heath cath, things went downhill quickly but Rachel was by our side the whole time and she saved his life! He couldn’t breathe and she knew exactly what was wrong and what to do. His chest was filling up with blood, and as his blood pressure dropped to 60/30, Rachel prayed over my husband! Looking back, that was one of the biggest blessings I‘ve seen at a hospital! Then I was asked to wait in the waiting room down the hall, I was so scared! Especially when I saw many people around my husband’s bed, running down the hall, rushing him back to surgery!
When Rachel got a minute, she came to the waiting room to explain what was going on with my husband and what had happened. She brought me back to his room to gather his things and said, “Please sit and eat this tray of food as he will not be eating it,” again she saw a need and took care of me! Compassion and empathy are not taught, it’s something you just have, or you don’t, and Rachel definitely has it! As I was sitting in the waiting room, waiting on any word on my husband, Rachel appeared with transport with a wheelchair to take me to his new room. You see, in previous conversations with her, I had explained I have lung issues and previously had a brain aneurysm, and when I get stressed I sometimes get a little confused, to say the least, I was a little confused!
Once again, Rachel saw a need and took care of it! I won’t go into all the details of the next 13 days, but my husband had triple-bypass surgery during that time. One morning I walked into his room, and he was smiling ear to ear and said, “guess who my nurse is today?” I knew immediately it was Rachel, our guardian angel! To be honest, I left for home a little earlier that night knowing he was in good hands. During our 15-day stay at Baptist Health, everyone starting with the doctors, nurses, CNA’s, dietary, housekeeping, volunteers to name just a few, were absolutely top-notch! But Rachel stood out like a shining star, with her compassion, empathy, professionalism, and knowledge of her job. She went above and beyond the call of duty! Thank you, Rachel Kiser and Baptist Health for saving my husband’s life.
