Rachel is an excellent example of what a nurse should be. When she is the charge nurse on the med/surg unit she is an excellent resource and leader for everyone working with her. She is an incredible nurse and patient advocate while putting a tremendous effort into the orthopedic program. She helps to advance the newest in orthopedic care to superiors on the committee and works diligently with the orthopedic patients on the floor to make sure they have successful recoveries. Her compassion and kindness to patients and families is unmatched.

Rachel acts as a guardian angel not just for patients, but regularly for her colleagues. When she asks you “How are you doing,” it is truly genuine. She takes the time to listen and follow up to make sure those around her are doing okay, remembers every detail, offers the purist support, and respects the privacy of each individual that opens up to her.

As her colleague, Rachel has been a true blessing with her presence in my personal and professional life. I feel lucky for each person I work with, but lucky enough to work most shifts alongside Rachel. This last year has been a true challenge of personal growth for myself in my home life and work life. She has supported me every step of the way. When asking her about ideas for our unit and hospital or learning new things, her radiant positivity gives just the right push of encouragement to go for it.

When going through some of the hardest times in my personal life this last year, Rachel was my saving grace. On days I felt like I couldn’t pull myself together enough to show up to work and be present, she gave me the words of advice that brought out a strength I never knew I had. I hold on tightly and it has forever changed me. She was there for me as my charge nurse, my colleague, and friend.

She has changed my life, the life of countless patients, and many others with her guidance, wisdom, and her warrior nurse heart.
