She is a quiet leader who most certainly leads by example. She takes such good care of patients on the unit and does so too with staff who are working with her.
When it comes to providing quality care, the actual patient may not be aware know all of the moving pieces and teamwork it takes to deliver great outcomes. Your colleagues, however, will almost always know. This month’s DAISY Award is a great example of quiet leadership and the importance of expressing appreciation. Thank you to her nominator for sharing his gratitude, and a huge congratulations to Rachel Wiley, Registered Nurse III in Telemetry/1-Main!

Rachel first joined Salinas Valley Health in June of 2018 and while she admits she doesn’t like the spotlight, she is so appreciative of the recognition, the time Michael took to write the nomination and to her fellow nurses who came in on their day off to be here for today’s DAISY Award announcement and celebration.

In his nomination, M wrote in part, “… nurses like Rachel are a breath of fresh air & an asset to any unit, or hospital. She is a quiet leader who most certainly leads by example. She takes such good care of patients on the unit and does so too with staff who are working with her. Rachel treats everyone so well and truly cares about what she does. When she is charge, the entire unit runs smoothly, and she is constantly cruising around helping people, & troubleshooting unit issues.”

The nomination for Rachel detailed a specific challenging day on the Tele/Main 1 unit and how Rachel supported M when his patient group included a quadriplegic patient on a ventilator and isolation who had a bronchoscopy and a thoracentesis ordered for the day, a second patient who also had a thoracentesis scheduled for the day, and a third patient who was stable compared to the other two and had discharge orders early in the day. Rachel proactively took action that supported patient needs and the work M was doing by discharging the stable patient, acting as a runner for supplies, and monitoring other patients during the isolation procedures.

M concluded by writing, “1 Main is incredibly lucky to have Rachel working there, & I am so very appreciative that she was there with me that day. These are the types of nurses, the ones who go above and beyond to support their team and patients, who deserve to be recognized as Elite, and are also deserving of consideration/ nomination to receive the DAISY Award for their efforts.”
