One day this summer, Rachel was on her way to work when she came upon an injured bicyclist on the side of the road. She immediately went into action, using her newly acquired trauma assessment skills and rendered aid to the patient alongside a police officer and another nurse until EMS arrived. The patient was emergently transported to NIMC in critical condition after Rachel, the police officer and other nurse successfully resuscitated him on the street. He was then stabilized and transferred to Advocate Condell Medical Center. The patient arrived at Condell with a lack of all brain stem function reflexes.
Due to the non-survivable brain injury, care was withdrawn and he passed away that evening surrounded by his family. The efforts of the nurse on the scene and the police should be commended. By being able to have ROSC (return of spontaneous circulation) the patient's family was able to be with him during his last minutes.
Thank you, Rachel, for the work you do every day. You truly embody the values of Advocate Sherman in all that you do. You do make a difference in the lives of our patients.
