Rachel Miller 2023, BSN, RN

Yesterday was my first day at UPMC Carlisle. Rachel was orienting me to the unit and we had an elderly, end of life patient. Not only was Rachel kind and compassionate, but she also went above and beyond to connect with the patient and her family. She made sure everyone had tissues, answered questions (even if they were asked by multiple people), walked family members where they needed to go and went out of her way to ensure that the patient was comfortable and able to enjoy her time with her family before she passed. When we left for the night, the patient took Rachel’s hands and touched her forehead to Rachel's to say thank you. It was a moving moment amidst the chaos of the ED and really showed the UPMC values of caring, listening, dignity, and respect. She made a difference for the patient and her family, and her actions showed me that I picked the right place to work. If I were a patient, I would want Rachel as my nurse.
