Rachel, overhearing what was going on, volunteered to come up to 9700 and help with the catheter insertion and CBI initiation.
Division 9700 had a very complicated patient with a history of prostate cancer whose foley was clogged due to multiple blood clots in his bladder and who was receiving two units of blood for critical hemoglobin. The urologist ordered continuous bladder irrigation to be started. 9700 staff were unfamiliar with initiating this procedure, and the RN caring for the patient was unsuccessful at inserting the three-way Foley. The Nurse Manager went to Division 7600 to get a smaller size catheter. Rachel, overhearing what was going on, volunteered to come up to 9700 and help with the catheter insertion and CBI initiation. She provided the smaller catheter, ordered the lidocaine gel, and was able to get the catheter placed, and CBI set up while answering all the RN’s questions. She was so helpful and friendly, and we are beyond grateful for her assistance. Her willingness to help another nursing unit without hesitation is an example of a true DAISY Nurse.
