My husband just finished his sixteenth visit to the hospital. As always I feel compelled to let you know how his visit went. As usual the staff on 3 East provided the most excellent care!
There is however one nurse that really shined above everyone else. The nurse I am speaking of is Rachel Smith. Rachel provided top notch care to my husband but did not stop with just medical care. She also provided emotional comfort to us both. Maybe I should tell you of the incident which started the whole ball rolling.
Our doctor came in for his daily visit, at this time we had a very abrupt and an uncomfortable conversation about "end of life measures". Rachel and the Patient representative were present for this very uncomfortable conversation. Well as you can well imagine I was in a panic! My husband was thinking he was a goner and grew very quiet and sullen. Rachel picked up on our mood immediately! Right away she started to comfort us both, and she did not stop there. Every day that Rachel worked whether or not she was my husband's nurse, she came to check on him. EVERYDAY!!! Before she left for the day, she stopped to say goodnight to him, always turning into a 30 minute visit. One day she visited him through the time she was supposed to be having lunch! Time is so precious to a nurse, but she gave so freely of herself and freely gave him her time.
She calmed his fears with soothing touches and words. Rachel shared her faith and wisdom with "A heart filled with faith in God has no room for fear" what a beautiful sentiment. She offered him comfort, strength and the confidence he needed to get back on his feet. But most importantly she shared her faith with us! She freely gave hugs and prayers that continually reinforced our faith! She is truly one of a kind!
Little did we know that Rachel was fighting her own problems. We were told that Rachel had to fly home to visit her uncle who was not expected to live 3 days. We were Speechless! Here was this nurse with an uncle fighting a terminal illness, giving such comfort to a stranger. "The greatest feeling in all the world is when God is proud of you" I am sure God is very proud of Rachel. I know we are very proud of her. We are so very grateful to her!
