Rachel Usry was making a routine visit when she noticed that the Veteran's leg was swollen and warm to the touch. Upon advice to seek external care, the Veteran was reluctant to go to the Emergency Room. RN Usry decided to stay to use this opportunity to educate the Veteran and his spouse of the importance of receiving the appropriate care, in the hope that she would be able to convince the Veteran and his spouse that a visit to the Emergency room. Her commitment and dedication eventually paid off when the Veteran agreed to the Emergency Room visit. RN Usry remained with the Veteran to oversee a safe hand-off with the EMT staff. RN Usry's dedication and commitment to patient care were on full display, as she advocated both the Veteran and his spouse the importance of receiving the appropriate care for his condition. She ensured that they had her support, by remaining with them for an additional two hours.
