Rachel had a patient who was very confused after surgery. He spoke of various situations that did not make sense, and it was quite apparent that he was confused and disoriented. However, Rachel noticed in the midst of various incoherent conversation pieces this patient mentioned his dog needing a daily insulin dose. The patient seemed concerned that this family did not know how to administer the insulin. Rachel could have easily brushed off this concern as the patient was clearly very confused; however, she went the extra mile, showing care and compassion for this patient's needs. Rachel made multiple phone calls to this patient's family and eventually found someone to go to the patient's house and administer the insulin. In talking to Rachel about this, she told me she knew this was bothering the patient, and she wanted to put him at ease. This, to me, exemplifies the traits of an extraordinary nurse!
