Thanks to Rain, my mom was able to spend almost 3 hours with my dad before he passed. This made a huge difference for all of us, as I believe my dad was waiting to see my mom.
My mom was in the hospital for newly diagnosed lung cancer. During her stay, my dad, whom I take care of, was sent to an inpatient hospice for respite care while we focused on my mother’s treatment. While in respite care, my father began to rapidly decline. We had gotten a call that my dad’s condition had changed and worsened in the 45 minutes since I left his bedside.

The nurse informed me that he was showing signs of mottling, and she believed it would be good for me to remain at the bedside overnight. I left the room to take this call, but my mom knew something was off and hollered for someone to come in. Her nurse, Rain, then met me in the hall to see what was going on. When I told her, she first comforted me and asked if there was anything she could do. She was willing and able to help me better explain to my mom what mottling is and what was happening with my dad. Rain then asked what hospice my dad was at, and without hesitation, she began making phone calls and arranging for my mom to be able to take a leave of absence from her hospital stay to see and spend time with my dad before his passing.

Rain had everything set up and worked out before the end of her shift. She spent the last hour of her shift, when things can get so crazy, making sure my mom would get closure and peace during such a hard time in her life. Thanks to Rain, my mom was able to spend almost 3 hours with my dad before he passed. This made a huge difference for all of us, as I believe my dad was waiting to see my mom. Within ten minutes of her leaving, my dad passed away.

Not only is Rain an overall amazing nurse who remained attentive and gentle with my mom, but few people would also have done what she did to ensure my mom got comfort and closure during this time. We will forever remember and be grateful for not only her amazing care but also for the empathy she showed when we were facing the unthinkable during an already hard diagnosis. She was also sweet enough to check on the status of my dad, check on my mom, and comfort me and her on the next shift.
