Two weeks before my transplant, I met with my nurse. She educated me on the entire transplant process, how to contact the transplant team, care after discharge, and extensive education on all medications that I would later be prescribed. She went over the organ transplant manual, and she knew all the information by heart. She had a paper with a few key points, but she was able to tell me all the needed information as I followed along with my binder. She made sure I understood every tab and sub-bullet point. She made sure to ask me if I had any questions before we moved on to the next section. She was able to answer every question I had and made me feel at ease. The day after my surgery, she visited me and provided me with the kidney pillow, which helped me greatly with splinting my incision site during transfers and ambulation. I also asked her to be the first one to sign my pillow, and she was happy to do it. I mentioned to her that breakfast had been late that day, and I took my medications on an empty stomach. She promptly asked if she could bring me some snacks and crackers to keep on hand in case it happened again the next day. She went above and beyond her duties to make sure I had anything I needed. On the day of my discharge, she visited me as she promised she would. She asked if I needed anything else at all, and she answered one last question I had for her regarding my medical records. She pointed me in the right direction, and I was able to obtain the needed information for an insurance claim. She is the most compassionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely altruistic nurse I have met. She made me feel comfortable and like family from the moment I met her, which was not what I was expecting, but I truly appreciate her kindness before and during my transplant process. My transplant experience has been scary and full of uncertainty, but Randee sure made a positive difference by informing me every step of the way.
