We had a young 39 year old male gentleman in ICU. It was obvious this patient was in a terminal state. His family was at odds over his medical care. Eventually the patient came to the decision to make himself comfort care. Ranelle spent many hours with the patient and family discussing end of life care and his wishes. In the end the patient wished to go home and sit on the porch with his friends.
Ranelle coordinated a "field trip" outside for this patient. He had been in the hospital for 35 days and wished to have the cool breeze and sun on his face. Ranelle not only did this once, but coordinated this trip 2 days in a row. She went above and beyond to make sure this patient was comfortable and allowed him to trek outside which to most would have seemed impossible.
Ranelle wasn't asked to do this, she simply saw a patient in need and went above and beyond to ensure this patient's wishes were met. It is also important to note that on a subsequent day that happened to be Ranelle's day off, she came in to assist the nursing staff on Med/Surg to get the patient outside.
