Ravae Thomas was given the DAISY award for her compassion for her patient's privacy and last wishes. The patient was a very private person and not all her family and friends even knew she was terminally ill.
Ravae was this patient's nurse in her final days. The patient had come to trust Ravae and requested that she be the one to care for her in her final days as well. The patient did pass at the facility with Ravae as her caregiver, and before her death, the patient was able to relay her final wishes to Ravae so that her family would know what wanted to be done with her affairs after she died.
Ravae showed true compassion and love taking care of this patient in her time of need, but it was what she did after her death that made her DAISY award material. Ravae attended the patient's memorial service to meet her family and friends and she told the family her patient's final wishes. The family was glad to meet the outstanding nurse that cared for their family member as well as being able to receive their loved one's last wishes. Ravae went above and beyond in this patient's time of need, reinforcing that patient care and patient's wishes are why we continue to do what we do every day.
