Becky has been a clinical nurse at Uptown ED/UC for almost 10 years and she demonstrates caring compassion daily. She has trained almost every nurse who has walked through these doors including countless students and support staff. Becky is the type of nurse who not only recognizes a problem but also quickly finds a solution so she can move on and complete her job. Anaphylaxis is a common diagnosis in the ED/UC setting, and we utilize special kits with appropriate medications and equipment required to effectively respond to the emergency. While Becky was drawing up various medications from the anaphylaxis kit, she realized she had to make her own labels to identify each syringe. While we all want to respond quickly in an emergency, she paused and placed safety first. Becky thought about the problem and collaborated with pharmacy to request specific labels be added in the kit. What a simple yet effective solution! Now the anaphylaxis kits house-wide contain specific labels for each medication. Her actions exemplify her commitment to patient safety, target zero, and the mission of Children's Hospital Colorado.
