When Becky heard the patient's desire, she readily stepped up to the plate to be her personal hair stylist and trim/cut the patient's hair.
A patient came to our unit as an admission one night after a fall at her workplace, tripping over a mop. She worked the night shift and her hip was broken and in need of surgical repair. After a successful surgery the next day, her CNA gave the lady a bath. Her hair was matted and unable to be combed. Through conversation, the patient shared she was unable to raise her arms to comb her hair, and her husband and son, whom she lived with, did not want to do that for her. The patient reported it had been several months since it was combed. The patient voiced desire to have her hair cut to remove the matted hair. When Becky heard the patient's desire, she readily stepped up to the plate to be her personal hair stylist and trim/cut the patient's hair. Becky held tight to the hair as she attempted to comb through the matted mess so as not to pull on her head and cause pain. Becky gingerly combed as much as possible, only cutting away the absolute necessary clumps. After 2 shampoo caps, combing, and cutting, the lady's hair was able to be combed out. Becky then separated the hair to trim the ends even, then brought the rest of the hair down and trimmed to layer the hair. When finished, one could not tell any clumps of hair had been cut out. The patient was applicative that her hair was cut and able to be combed again. One could tell the patient's whole personal demeanor was improved. The patient was reminded that blessings can come out of negative circumstances.

Thank you, Becky for spending time with this patient to make a difference in her life.
