Our patient was transferring to a new facility after being her for 2 years. Becky had the day off but offered to meet him at the facility to help him settle in. She spent 4 hours unpacking his belongings, setting up his room, wheeling him around the facility, and explaining things to the staff to ensure he would be comfortable. Becky cares deeply about her patients. She’s kind, gentle, and has empathy for others’ situations. She is thorough, not only with reading orders and giving meds, but with checking on the mental health and accommodating needs of patients.

A dialysis patient, who was failing to thrive, made a decision to transition to comfort care. His daughter lived in Florida and was unable to be by his side. He was afraid to die. Becky sat with him; they discussed faith, and Becky reassured him she would keep him comfortable. She was attentive and empathetic. She repositioned and medicated, keeping her promise. He then passed when she was at lunch. She returned, a little stunned, but managed to continue providing care, this time to his daughter.

The initial call to report his death was made by Dr. X. Becky called the next day to check on the daughter, since she couldn’t be there. She comforted the daughter by sharing the last few hours of her dad’s life. The daughter had been grateful for the exceptional care he received and was able to have some closure, knowing her dad was supported in his decision. Becky is kind, compassionate, and gently with her nursing care and holistic approach. She is a gem.
