Rebecca leads by example
"It appears that your mother has a brain tumor, it is very serious and my best guess is that it is a glioblastoma" These are the words that I heard from a primary care doctor at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. These are words that no one ever wants to hear, especially with the circumstances of time and distance that we were in.

I had just been given a promotion to Business Manager of Nursing Administration at Riverview Medical Center a month earlier. I was in the middle of learning my new responsibilities and training when the pandemic hit, and then news of my mother's health was revealed to me. To say that I was overwhelmed and frightened was an understatement. I had asked my mother’s Doctor to fax me the results of my mother's MRI and went straight to my leader, Rebecca Graboso.

I went to Rebecca with a copy of my mother's MRI clutched in my hands. We sat down in her office and she reviewed the results and we spoke about what this all meant. With her knowledge as a Certified Neuroscience Nurse Practitioner, she explained everything in detail with kindness but let me know that my mother was in for a fight and that the outcome would most likely be terminal. The very next sentence was that I was not to worry, I had her full support no matter what I needed to do in terms of my employment. She told me to take one day at a time and to keep her posted on whatever I needed to do.

For the next ten months on an intermittent Family Leave and as the primary caregiver to my mother, through surgery, radiation treatments, two stays in rehabilitation, a hospital admission, private home care, chemotherapy, and ultimately hospice and my mother's passing at home, I always had Rebecca's full support. She was always available for a chat, some advice, and reassurance that I was doing well with my job.

I am not a Nurse, but Rebecca makes me feel like an integral part of the Nursing team at Riverview Medical Center. There is always an opportunity to learn and grow. Rebecca leads by example and through the pandemic and my mother's illness she made me feel strong and I was quite amazed by what I could accomplish both personally and professionally.

To have Rebecca Graboso as a leader is both an honor and a privilege. As her Business Manager, I see firsthand the support and respect that she gives to all her directors, Nurse leaders, and staff.
