Nurse Becca took exceptional care of me in the ICU during a week-long stay in the hospital. I had just become a new mother and delivered via C-section a week or so before my return to the hospital which required a second C-section among numerous other things. I still remember the moment I woke up in the ICU, scared and panicking trying to pull my tube out; her face was the first I saw as she was trying to calm me down telling me everything was fine and that I was alright. My arms were already very sore and bruised when I came in due to my previous stay, so Becca made sure to always be gentle as to not hurt me when trying to put in a new IV or draw blood.
She was the only one I trusted to even touch me or even turn me when I needed to be turned on my side. She made sure to always give me my pain medication when I needed it to ensure that it was always at a tolerable level and that I was always comfortable. Becca helped make sure I could breathe properly again once my tube was out, helped me learn to sit up again, walk again, eat again and use the bathroom on my own again. She was always so calm and patient with me, never getting angry or impatient or rushing me, even when I would mentally breakdown and cry. She gave me a shoulder to cry on and a warm hug when I so desperately needed it.
When Becca's shift would be over for the day, I couldn't wait to see her the next morning to show her that I could roll over or sit up on my own knowing that she would be pleased to see the improvement I had made. Then, the day came that I was to be transferred back to labor and delivery. Not only was I scared but was dreading having to leave Becca, not knowing if the new nurse would keep me as comfortable and not hurt me when blood needed to be drawn or a new IV needed to be inserted. I honestly was just wishing that I could take her with me for the rest of my stay. Never have I felt so safe trusting my life in someone else's hands as I did hers. I will always be beyond grateful and forever indebted to the love, care and compassion that she showed me.
