Becky intuitively took a fingerstick blood glucose on a pediatric patient who had been having nausea/vomiting x10 days. It was above 600 on POCT (948 on serum) which prompted her to get the patient in a room and having staff work on drawing her labs and starting a work-up prior to me even seeing the patient. The patient ended up being diagnosed with new-onset type 1 diabetes, was in DKA and transferred to a PICU. Because of her foresight in triage, the patient got care in an appropriate expedited manor.
