He wrote on the whiteboard, "Please don't leave me alone." Without hesitation, Becky immediately retrieved a portable computer and stationed herself right next to him.
Becky was taking care of an intubated patient who was fully mentally intact and very aware of what was going on. The patient had not been getting many visitors at this time and utilized a personal whiteboard to communicate. When Becky asked him if he needed anything before she stepped out, he wrote on the whiteboard, "Please don't leave me alone." Without hesitation, Becky immediately retrieved a portable computer and stationed herself right next to him. When I walked past the room over an hour later, she was still in his room, holding his hand and doing her charting. This caring act truly went above and beyond and even though Becky probably had a million other things on her plate at the moment, she did not hesitate to complete this small act of kindness that truly made a difference for the patient and made what was probably one of the worst moments of the patient's life, slightly better.
