She met the patient in the new unit and stayed as long as she could to help the patient adjust to her new surroundings.
Rebecca was the primary nurse for a patient scheduled for transfer from PCU8 to PCU5 for acute stroke care. News of this transfer triggered an extreme response from the patient that can be described as anxious, suspicious, paranoid, irrational, and ultimately led to a declaration of staunch refusal. Rebecca spent the majority of the shift in conversation with the patient, listening, explaining, and reassuring, without losing her patience or becoming abrupt. She tried and tried again to find the words that would convey that this transfer was in the patient's best interest. She did her absolute best not to rush or impose the transfer without the patient's acceptance. Her manner was gentle, kind, compassionate, and respectful. It must be noted that Rebecca's attention to the patient's emotional distress is tough to sustain while caring for other patients and feeling the time pressure to make the transfer.
Eventually, time ran out, and the transfer was made against the patient's wishes; however, Rebecca's care and attention did not stop there. She met the patient in the new unit and stayed as long as she could to help the patient adjust to her new surroundings. All of Rebecca's time, attention, and dedication, which spanned an entire shift, had to have been felt by the patient.
Rebecca, you truly exemplify what it means to provide "Patient Centered Care," and you are so deserving of this recognition! Thank you for all you do and continue to do for the patients at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, putting patients first and people always!
