Nominated by a patient's family: Becky was the Day nurse 2 days in a row for our 7 year old son. Our son has cerebral palsy, a seizure disorder, and is visually impaired. He was at WakeMed for a special procedure. My son's needs are more than just "special". His visual impairment and the fact that he is non-verbal makes it difficult to communicate, especially when he needs something.
Becky's excellent nursing skills along with her professional experience working with children with developmental disabilities gave her an insight to my son's needs that others might not have. She helped to create a quiet, undisturbed environment when he couldn't sleep. She explained anything we had questions about. She made sure he had everything he needed from chocolate milk to a nice "sponge" bath after he got sick.
Obviously all pediatric nurses have a special gift to care for our babies - but Becky is an exceptional example of great healthcare. She is a real gem.
