Becca has done so much with our NICU Palliative Care Team in the NICU. I worked on day shift caring for one of my primary patients who was on Palliative care while Becca was caring for him on night shift. She suggested the idea of a "Bucket List" for our patient, and his siblings, parents, and extended family members to check off while he was with us.
The family came up with ideas and Becca was the ringleader in getting the items on the list checked off. She was so creative with her ideas on how to pull off some of the activities! One of the things on the list was to have a day at the beach. Becca brought in play sand, a blow-up kiddie pool, a beach ball, sand toys, and even managed to borrow a heat lamp from the OR to make the "sunshine!" The family was elated and his siblings so enjoyed playing with him while he dipped his feet in the sand and water while wearing his swim trunks basking in the "sun" on night shift.
She also arranged to have a Disco Dance Party, which was also on the bucket list. She brought in a plastic ball and some rhinestones so that his sisters could decorate the disco ball and get in on the fun as well.
Another item on the list was to have a "Nerd Day," and Becca made a onesie painted to look like it was a button-up oxford shirt with a pocket-protector and some pencils inside. She found baby size black glasses and put tape around the bridge of the nose. The pictures were so adorable!
The family would always be in such high spirits when Becca was around. She helped so much more than she realized! Not only did she inspire the patient's family, but she also inspired those of us who are privileged to work with her. She showed me that with just the right amount of heart and creativity, anything you can dream up is possible to do, even while in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit!
I think it is very clear that Becca meets and even exceeds all of the criteria for receiving a DAISY award, and I hope she will get it as I truly can't think of a more deserving person who would never expect such recognition for what she sees as just a part of her everyday life on the job.
