The anesthesia department was asked to provide services for a special needs patient for radiology. After speaking with the mother of the patient, I realized that this was going to be a challenge for all involved. This was communicated to Becky Vogt, RN of the OPSU. Becky arranged that the patient would be able to arrive only moments before the procedure to decrease the anxiety of waiting. The morning of the procedure, the patient arrived approximately 30 minutes prior. Normally these patients arrive two hours prior. Becky assured the pre-procedure check-in process was seamless and quick. It was unforeseen that we would have to pre-medicate the patient in the waiting room. Becky arranged that we would have a semi-private area away from the other guests to do this. The patient was able to be pre-medicated with minimal effort away from the other guests. Becky continued to assist during the procedure with some minor unforeseen issues. The family was very appreciative of the efforts. I wanted to recognize her for her above and beyond efforts in making this unique situation stress free for the patient, family, and staff.
