Rebekah, through her empathy and compassion, not only provided him care second to none but made time to listen to him and his concerns.
This nomination was one of my father’s last wishes and is based on the information my father provided and requested to be shared. Rebekah cared for my father when he was admitted to the ICU and given a very serious and terminal diagnosis. Prior to this, my father was always cared for by family and not apart from them. Being hospitalized during the pandemic only added to the devastation of being very ill and unable to be with family. Dad was frightened and alone and didn’t always understand what was happening. Rebekah, through her empathy and compassion, not only provided him care second to none but made time to listen to him and his concerns. She took the time to explain what was happening to him and verified his comprehension. She even made sure his cell phone was charged and helped him take calls from family which provided him comfort. She also would take calls from family to help keep us involved and comforted knowing there was someone with Dad who truly cared about him. Dad shared how Rebekah would make sure to sit at the desk closest to his room to provide him comfort through her presence and consistency. The ICU was extremely busy and everyone moved so quickly. Rebekah treated Dad as if he were her only patient even though he wasn’t. Dad always felt as if she was looking after him like being at home. In my father’s 83 years of life, he had encountered many people and lived through many experiences. In all those years few had touched his life as Rebekah did, at a time of complete helplessness that words could never describe for both Dad and his family. Rebekah is not only a truly amazing nurse but an example of who and what every caregiver should be!
