Regina sat with the patient, allowing space for tears, silence, disbelief, and grief.
Regina Gomez shows exceptional compassion and humanity, which she demonstrated during an unimaginable tragedy. Our patient had recently undergone an ACDF surgery and was recovering in the hospital when her fiancé and their three children were in a fatal motor vehicle accident while on their way back to bring her dinner.
What was meant to be a simple act of kindness became an unexpected and devastating loss that no one could have prepared for. Although Regina was not assigned to this patient that day, she immediately stepped in to offer comfort and stability during the patient’s darkest moments. She recognized the depth of the patient’s shock and pain and provided a grounding, compassionate presence when the world had suddenly fallen apart.
Regina sat with the patient, allowing space for tears, silence, disbelief, and grief. She ensured the patient was not alone as the news unfolded, giving her gentle reassurance and emotional support without hesitation. She worked with the care team to coordinate trauma-informed interventions, paying careful attention to both the patient’s physical recovery from surgery and the overwhelming emotional trauma she was experiencing. She helped maintain a calm, safe environment, advocating for privacy, comfort, and continuity of care.
Her willingness to step outside her own assignment to be fully present for another human being reflects the highest ideals of nursing. Her actions were not based on duty—they were based on heart. In a moment when words were impossible, and pain was immeasurable, Regina provided compassion that made a difference. Her selflessness, empathy, and quiet strength brought comfort during a life-altering tragedy.
