I Mary Wilson nominate Regina Hoefner-Notz from Surgical Services/PACU as a deserving recipient
of the DAISY Award
I nominate Regina Hoefner-Notz, RN, BSN, CANP, Clinical Manager in Post-Anesthesia Care Unit for the DAISY Award. Regina came to Children’s 11 years ago. The majority of her nursing practice prior to coming to Children’s was at Boston Children’s, Massachusetts, CICU from 1981-1997. She came to The Children’s Hospital in 1998 and started in the PICU on the night shift. After 2 years, she transferred to Surgical Services, PACU in a CNIII position. She was recognized for her knowledge, ability to teach and lead and in 2001 accepted the Clinical Coordinator position in the PACU. She has remained in this leadership role for the past nine years, at a time when Surgical Services was expanding in volume. Regina accepted the Clinical Nurse Manager position for the PACU in 2007.
When I come to work, Regina always greets me with a genuine, “Hello Mary!”, and I start my day knowing I am appreciated and make a difference for families and their children. She role models a high level clinical skill in the PACU, family centered care and evidence based practice for staff. She treats all families, professional colleagues, and support staff with respect and addresses their comments/concerns with respect. When the hospital moved to our Aurora campus and Surgical Services were reorganized, Regina recognized this change affected the physicians and all members of the health care team. She is visible everyday she is at work and greets and checks in with people individually that come through the PACU. Her genuine commitment to quality care assures all they are important to our work in the PACU.
Being a best hospital in then nation doesn’t just happen. It is a day by day commitment. Regina has always known what being the best at what you do means. She did not start in the PACU with a knowledge base of perianesthesia care, but astutely found out. Ten years ago when I worked in the PACU many leadership changes were occurring and PACU staff existed in a leadership vacuum. I have always admired Regina for knowing where to start to bring the quality and stability in the care delivered to make certain of high satisfaction from families and staff. She made it her business to learn the standard of care for perianesthesia nursing practice; she went to the experts, the professional society: American Society of Perianesthesia Nursing (ASPAN). Through her membership in ASPAN, she learned the national standard of care from an organization that has been in existence for 30 years. To this day, she consistently encourages staff to become a member, to read professional journals and make it a part of everyone’s practice to be evidence-based. In early 2009, Regina received the respected certification of Clinical Perianesthesia Nurse (CPAN) through ASPAN. I returned to a staff position in the PACU three years ago and staff cohesiveness was alive and thriving. Regina continues to pay attention by keeping team spirit alive and carefully considering potential candidates for positions in the PACU. Interviews regularly include staff participation.
I consider Regina an advocate not only for families and staff, but also to The Children’s Hospital mission and network of care. Our service line within Surgical Services includes among others, the South Surgery Center (SSC). Admit/Discharge and PACU staffs cover the care delivered at SCC. One objective of this operation, clearly known by all perianesthesia staff at the main campus, is to minimize staffing costs by creatively using the Admit/Discharge and PACU personnel to cross cover each other and ensure this network of service meets our cost containment goals.
So, in conclusion I strongly nominate Regina for the Daisy Award. She exemplifies the traits and commitment of the profession of nursing and gives the very best in care while taking pride in the organization and making it everyone’s business to be a part of our pediatric care that is tops in the nation!
