I am a nursing student and I would like to thank my preceptor nurse by sharing my story. I spend 8 weeks externship in Surgical Unit (OR). Throughout my externship, I got a chance to shadow my preceptor nurse, Regina Honaker. She displayed strong professional ethics and attitude in all aspects of her care for patients. Although it took a few weeks and several opportunities to develop my hands-on skills, Regina encouraged me to perform nursing skills. The opportunities and guidance provided by the preceptor, Regina, were critical in me getting the opportunities to develop those skills.
She also inspired me with her approach to collaborating with the surgery team members. My observations of her interaction with the team members taught me that effective communication with staff members requires interpersonal collaboration within the operating room. Because of Regina's guidance, actions displayed, I found a comfortable routine and an effective approach to being a member of the team. She also demonstrated an effective process in communicating with the other units' nurses. I learned that these communications are vital parts of the surgery process.
Regina provided constructive feedback necessary to help me understand those actions and improve my skills to avoid errors or mistakes. Her feedback allowed me to learn the proper way of performing those functions. She approached aspects of patient care differently while maintaining the high standards required by nurses. Because of Regina, my externship experience gives me confidence and developed my nursing skills while providing proper nursing practice and patient care.
Regina also taught me to be a patient advocate. She provided a good model of how to fulfill this role in providing patient care. It was truly overwhelming at times when she was very busy with different patients but she still focused on making sure the patient received proper care and safety. Regina also taught me an important part of the externship experience, which is applying my critical thinking skills necessary for proper patient care. I enjoyed working with her and I felt part of an important surgery team.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my preceptor nurse, Regina Honaker. She imparted my thoughts and well-being regarding the area and where I would be passionate about nursing.
