Regis is one of our stars. He literally is everywhere in the unit. He is able to do pre-op/PACU/Pain and GI. I am not sure how he does it, but he is fully present for his patients and his coworkers. He is engaged in the workplace in an exceptional manner. I see that daily. His coworkers enjoy having Regis in the team as well. Regis exemplifies the values of Loma Linda in his unit.
Excellence: He writes EERs and e-mails letting leadership know of issues. He doesn't stay with the status quo rather; he looks for ways to better processes.
Teamwork: He accepts assignments with a positive attitude.
Compassion: He helps his coworkers and listens to them.
One particular day stuck to my mind though. A few months ago, we received a patient as a transfer from an MC unit. The patient arrived via transport nursing and Regis was the first one to assess the patient. He immediately recognized signs and symptoms of distress and hemodynamic instability on the patient. He called anesthesia, he asked his team for help, and the patient was intubated in pre-op and stabilized and sent back to the MC to an ICU bed.
I was amazed at the level of care Regis gave. I saw him move quickly, act, not hesitate; he saved the patient. He reassured the family- needless to say, the family was in shock! They thought their loved one was coming to SH to have surgery and all of a sudden, the picture completely turned 180 degrees. Regis never blamed anybody in the process. He just did what he had to do, showing all of our core values: teamwork, compassion, excellence, integrity, and wholeness.
That day I felt so proud of the team we have at SH! I was proud to work here with such a wonderful group.
