Rene was in charge on Saturday when a patient came in from home who had been unable to ambulate from his couch for 3 days. The patient's living conditions were "bad" as reported from EMS. The patient stated that he had the same depends on for 3 days and hadn't bathed in at least 2 weeks. Rene was in charge and rather than delegated the task or ignore it completely, she put on her PPE and helped me clean, bathe, and gown this patient prior to admission. I was perfectly ok to do it by myself since he was my patient and I didn't want to expose anyone else to the possibility of scabies (2 days later confirmed). Showing what true leadership is she said, "If you need to do it, then I need to do it. That is what a charge nurse does". It took quite a bit of time but the time was greatly decreased because it was 2 of us instead of just me. This is what team work is about!
