Renee used this time of uncertainty and unprecedented change to re-affirm the professional practice of nursing. Through her leadership, she reminded us that this was the moment we had been preparing for all along.
As healthcare becomes more complex, with increasing demands on nurse Leaders, we believe those who create an environment of compassion and recognition for others strongly deserve to be recognized themselves. Nurse leaders provide a safe environment for staff, both physically and emotionally, where nurses are inspired to do their very best. These leaders provide a setting where compassion is valued, and staff, in turn, demonstrate the exemplary practice and treat patients and families with deep humanity. The DAISY Nurse Leader Award gives staff, patients, and families a way to express their gratitude for the compassionate environment nurse leaders provide.

This year as we necessarily spent most of our time focused on managing our response to the pandemic and supporting our staff on the front line, one nurse leader continued to work tirelessly on telling our story, measuring, and analyzing the impact of our care at the front line and preparing the organization for our third Magnet Designation. Immediately prior to the start of the pandemic, in February 2020, we submitted our document for our third designation. On time and according to timeline, we were preparing for a site visit and hopeful for a great outcome. The pandemic hit in March; how quickly and suddenly everything changed! For Renee Roberts-Turner the pandemic changed everything and changed nothing at the same time.

Renee used this time of uncertainty and unprecedented change to re-affirm the professional practice of nursing. Through her leadership, she reminded us that this was the moment we had been preparing for all along. She reminded us that the foundation of nursing excellence that we had worked so hard to hardwire was exactly what would get us through the challenges that now were in front of us. While we worked diligently to meet the needs of our patients and families, Renee was behind the scenes solidifying our story and noting exemplars that strengthened our Magnet journey.

For never losing faith, for recognizing the exceptional moments of transformational leadership, structural empowerment, and exemplary practice that emerged as a result of our response to Covid, I recognize Dr. Renee Roberts Turner. The strongest indication of the impact Renee made this year was of course preparing the organization for an impeccable Virtual Magnet Site visit and delivering to the organization our third Magnet designation. Renee is also an appraiser for the ANCC Magnet program, a role that acknowledges her expertise and national reputation for nursing excellence. Renee has led the work of coordinating our response to nurse recognition opportunities within the community. This led to 5 of our nurses being recognized as finalists for the Washington Post Star Nurses’ Award and 4 of our nurses being recognized through excellence in nursing awards sponsored by the Washingtonian Magazine.

She leads internal nurse recognition through The DAISY Award Program – a program that is notable as an essential means of acknowledging the contributions of outstanding nurses and supporting the retention of nurses through recognition of the impact they make for patients and families everywhere. Renee supports the dissemination of new knowledge through published manuscripts and is co-editor of a text on quality improvement.

Also, Renee is a principal investigator for an IRB-approved 2-site study. She leads numerous quality improvement initiatives that focus on nursing practice, including most recently medication administration and communication of safety alerts when needed. She supports the nursing model for decision-making, which is founded on the premise of shared decision-making between direct care nurses and members of nursing leadership. Most recently she accepted the request to represent nursing on the organization-wide DEI Steering Committee.

For Renee’s steadfast and committed work focused on the professional practice of nursing, for giving us a voice and allowing us to elevate our stories, defining the impact and the value of nursing both at Children’s and beyond our walls, I am proud to recognize Dr. Renee Roberts-Turner as a DAISY Nurse Leader.
