Renee Spacher Kendall, BSN, RN
I am honored to nominate Renee Spacher Kendall, BSN, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of her extraordinary compassion, advocacy, and dedication to patient-centered care.
Recently, Renee played a pivotal role in the care of a young stroke patient who suddenly lost her ability to communicate—leaving her unable to express her needs, wishes, or concerns during one of the most frightening and vulnerable times in her life. In the absence of the patient’s voice, Renee became her strongest advocate. She worked tirelessly to ensure that the patient’s care plan reflected not only her clinical needs, but also her dignity, preferences, and long-term goals for recovery.
Renee provided unwavering support to the patient’s family, guiding them through complex medical decisions with compassion and clarity while ensuring they felt informed, heard, and empowered. She took the time to truly listen—to both spoken and unspoken concerns—and helped bridge the gap between the care team, rehabilitation services, and outside vendors essential for planning the patient’s recovery and safe transition of care.
Her collaboration with external partners was instrumental in coordinating timely therapies and post-acute resources, ensuring that nothing fell through the cracks during a critical period of recovery. Thanks to Renee’s proactive communication, attention to detail, and steadfast commitment, this young patient received seamless, holistic support despite her inability to speak for herself.
In a moment when this patient needed someone to stand in her corner, Renee did just that—demonstrating the true essence of nursing advocacy and compassion. Her ability to go above and beyond for both patients and the professionals who support their care makes her exceptionally deserving of the DAISY Award.
