The patient was not being mobilized to a chair until Resmi took the initiative.
We all know VAP is common in chronic vented patients. We had a patient in 2 South for a long time awaiting long-term placement. I was break RN and about to send Resmi on break. She asked for a few more minutes before going on break because she needed to get this patient out of bed to the chair that morning. I asked, "we’re getting her out of bed with the vent?" "Yes, I always get all my patients out of bed", Resmi said. So then I helped Resmi get the patient up using our overhead lift equipment and sent her on break. I had reviewed the patient's chart and while the patient was getting repositioned every 2 hours by staff on previous days, the patient was not being mobilized to a chair, until Resmi took the initiative. The very next day I was assigned to the same patient, so now Resmi had set the bar for this patient, out of bed to chair 3x/day. I passed on the expectation to the next shift and to the PCTs. From there on out this patient was consistently being mobilized. This is just one of many examples of Resmi setting a standard of care and expectations for patient care.
