I am nominating a phenomenal nurse, Reta King, for the DAISY Award. I was privileged to have Reta as my nurse during the labor and delivery of my first child. She has admirable interpersonal skills and is excellent at educating patients and families. From the moment she walked in my room, she explained everything to my husband and me, and she answered every question we had. My husband was nervous about how he would do during the delivery (he has a history of losing consciousness when blood is involved). Reta encouraged him to be an active participant in my care, and she gave him the confidence to do so.
Reta was calm and reassuring. She said and did all the right things at the right times. She made our delivery experience truly amazing. Due to unforeseen complications with my delivery, I was unable to do skin-to-skin care with my infant son in the immediate postpartum period. While the doctors and midwives were attending to me, I looked over and saw Reta talking with my husband. He started to take his shirt off, and I then realized that she was allowing him to provide the skin-to-skin care. I am so thankful he was allowed to have that experience with my infant son. It still makes me smile when I think about it. Without Reta’s quick thinking and commitment to family centered care, that wonderful experience would never have happened. At a recent gathering with friends, I overheard my husband telling his buddies “Our nurse was awesome, she could not have been any better. I wish everyone could have her as a nurse.”
In addition to being an amazing nurse, Reta was my coach, cheerleader and advocate. UNMH should be proud to have her as an employee. Reta is a role model for all health professionals; her compassion, dedication, teamwork and professionalism are enviable. If I could request a nurse to be at my future deliveries, hands down, Reta would be my first choice!
Thank you Reta for everything! You are amazing. You have set the bar high for all nurses; however I believe you are in a league of your own. I can only hope that one day I will be as great a nurse as you are. You are an inspiration!
