... Rarely, just listening to another nurse tell a story of what happened during their shift, would you be compelled to want to recognize the remarkable act of another nurse. Even rarer is that we get the pleasure of having one of our RRT nurses working side by side for any length of time, but that is what happened.

Daily, on our Labor and Delivery Unit, it is a pleasure when this nurse presents on the unit to check if there are any patients that we anticipate a need for the RRT nurse making a visit. Thankfully, rarely we have patients that have the need for a visit.

As one of the L&D nurses tells the story, Rhonda cames to the unit as usual and was directed to see a patient who was in active labor with an unexplainable high pulse. Her labor nurse had already placed the patient on a cardiac monitor, but needed more input to what the origin of the high pulse was. Rhonda quickly determined that the patient was in rapid A-FIB. She then managed all of the cardiac aspects of the patient, coordinating what the best course of action would be for this now high risk laboring patient. She stayed with the Labor and Delivery staff to manage the patient's compromised cardiac condition through the duration of the patient's labor.

Although the patient was experiencing her own medical issues, Rhonda enabled the patient to have a safe vaginal delivery and still enjoy the miracle of bringing a new life into this world. Her compassion overflowed as the baby was delivered. The nurse not only put all of the labor and delivery staff at ease knowing the mother was safe, but renewed all of the LD nurses of the gift we receive every day by helping bring babies into this world. Rhonda was completely humbled by the power of this new tiny life touching her life.

L&D feels that there is no one else more deserving of the DAISY Award, that Rhonda exemplifies all the values of Torrance Memorial; Service, Stability, Excellence, Knowledge and Community.

...

Rhonda stepped outside of her adult world and helped with a potential code on pediatrics (for a 13 year old). She was instrumental in helping the nurses intubate this child and went over and beyond to care for him and the family. Thank you for all the RRT support nurses but that day, this one, Rhonda, shined!
