Rhonda Thompson stepped up into a leadership role on our unit when the charge nurse was out 12 weeks for maternity leave and the clinical lead was out sick for two and half weeks. Rhonda guided the Float Pool RN’s through our unique paper work and admissions, and role-modeled appropriate and effective management skills for our patients with a variety of problems. Rhonda also helped coordinate unit and physician consults.
During a recent admit, Rhonda stayed an extra two and a half hours to ensure a smooth admit of a violent patient who had broken a staff member’s nose while on the acute care floor. Rhonda de-escalated the patient’s anger and anxiety by patiently answering all of his questions in a calm low voice. She gave him short, simple, yet thorough step by step explanations during the admission process. Rhonda introduced the patient to each staff member personally and gave him a guided tour of the unit. Thus helping him orient to his new surroundings. She wouldn’t leave until he felt comfortable here.
Rhonda consistently performs at an above average level and is a positive influence to her co-workers. She takes initiative and leads by example—always with a smile. Rhonda is a DAISY Nurse!!
