We received a critically ill patient from the ED to the ICU, a patient with a substance use disorder, a hemoglobin of 2, a severe GI bleed, and in hemorrhagic shock.

Each department worked diligently to stabilize this patient. A Blakemore tube was needed to stop this patient’s severe bleeding. The Blakemore tube is used in the ICU as a last-resort, emergency measure to temporarily control or tamponade bleeding from esophageal varices. The Blakemore tube was not available at RMC.

Our Nursing Leader, Ria Reyes, went above and beyond in her quest to find a Blakemore Tube for this patient.  She called a colleague at another hospital and found they had a tube!  Ria went to retrieve the tube and brought it to RMC. Thanks to Ria’s diligence, determination, and the efforts of the RMC team, this patient survived.

The DAISY Award is given to extraordinary nurses, those who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do every day.

We are so proud of Ria. She truly deserves this!

Thank you, Ria, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
