I washed away my tears in the shower, left all of my worries for the day behind, and had the best sleep ever in a clean bed knowing that one of the most respectful, kind, and compassionate nurses was responsible for my care at Kaiser.
My son is an oncology patient at Sunset Kaiser. Today he started his 5th week of radiation and chemo treatment. Being away from my son made my stay at the hospital very difficult. I felt I had lost control of everything! Richard came in and sanitized my mattress, changed my bedding, covered my IV line, and brought everything I needed for a shower. Instead of feeling like I was trapped in a hospital room, I suddenly felt joyful and optimistic. My room was clean, I was showered and felt like I was being taken care of in a spa. I cried in the shower thinking to myself... Richard knew I was set to go home the next day. He could have chosen to check my IV, turn off the light, and simply state, "Let me know if you need anything." Instead, he went above and beyond to make me feel as if my family was taking care of me. A stranger, perhaps he will never know what a difference treating others with compassion and dignity really makes. I washed away my tears in the shower, left all of my worries for the day behind, and had the best sleep ever in a clean bed knowing that one of the most respectful, kind, and compassionate nurses was responsible for my care at Kaiser. I will leave Kaiser with a new outlook ready to go home and bathe my son, who is battling cancer, with the same kindness and care that I received tonight. Richard is truly an example of a nurse who has taken nursing as a vocation and passion rather than just a job. I will be eternally grateful that he took the time to listen to me talk about my son's cancer and cared for me in such a kind manner. I strongly feel he should train others in hospitality and patient care. Thank-you Richard!!!
