May 2026 Honoree
Rickesha Brown, RN
I was placed in a hospice room at the VA Medical Center since the Community Living Center didn’t have a single room with a bathroom that could accommodate me as an inpatient during my cancer treatment.
At 51 years old, I was recently diagnosed with lung cancer—a diagnosis that came as a complete shock to me and my family, especially given my lifestyle. I’ve never smoked, drank alcohol, or used illicit drugs, so this news was both unexpected and deeply unsettling.
Amid all the chaos—physically, emotionally, and mentally—and my desire to remain involved in my care plan, I encountered a nurse who stood out in a truly exceptional way. Among the many dedicated staff, Nurse Kesha Brown distinguished herself through her empathy, compassion, and genuine attentiveness. She not only listened to my needs but made every effort to ensure they were met or relayed appropriately to the right level of care.
Her unwavering support and commitment to managing my pain in a way that honored both my medical needs and dignity—without ever being dismissive—made an indelible impact on my healing journey. For that, and for her remarkable character, I wholeheartedly believe Nurse Kesha Brown is a true DAISY Nurse.
I sincerely hope she is given the opportunity to grow in leadership and mentor others, as her example has the power to elevate nursing care for veterans like me—those of us who took an oath to serve this country and are now in need of care ourselves.
Thank you to the nomination committee for taking the time to consider Nurse Kesha Brown’s impact. It means a great deal to patients like me to have a chance to honor the caregivers who help us through our most vulnerable moments.
