Rikki purchased blue balloons on her day off, drawing from her own personal experience of honoring a loved one through balloon releases.
A patient admitted to the Medical Surgical department at Advent Health Avista shared with her nurse, Rikki Nye, that she would miss her annual tradition of releasing blue balloons in remembrance of her mother because of her health condition and admission to Avista.
The patient’s tradition, rooted in love, remembrance, and spiritual healing, was deeply meaningful to her, as blue was her mother's favorite color. The patient confided in Rikki that being hospitalized on the anniversary of her mother's passing left her feeling as though no one would care about her tradition. On the anniversary of her mother's death, Rikki organized the Med-Surg team for a special ceremony, demonstrating uncommon compassion and exemplifying our ‘love me’ service standard.
Rikki purchased blue balloons on her day off, drawing from her own personal experience of honoring a loved one through balloon releases. The patient's primary nurse on shift Eva and CNA Jelly carefully accompanied the patient outside joining Rikki, where the three supported the patient in releasing the balloons, standing with the patient she spoke heartfelt words and a tribute to her mother. Rikki created a sacred space for the patient to experience emotional healing, spiritual connection, and love from her care team during a vulnerable time while admitted at Avista.
