If it were not for Riley’s continued efforts, the patient would have stayed in hospice and not received the treatments she needed to try to survive.
Riley went above and beyond to be an advocate for her patient while on hospice. Riley’s patient came in with many medical issues and during her stay it was determined that she was unable to make her own medical decisions. Due to the severity of her illness, she was transitioned to comfort care and eventually inpatient hospice. This patient had a multitude of family issues resulting in family members arguing over decision-making for the patient. Riley continued to investigate and gather pertinent information regarding next of kin. It was clear that there were many inconsistencies between different family members' stories and Riley spent a great deal of time researching and gathering information to present to the hospice care management team. She even was able to make multiple phone calls to get one of the patient’s son's phone numbers, something that was not able to be found when the patient first arrived.

While dealing with the messy family situation, Riley continued to provide compassionate care to her patient. She continued to assess the patient’s cognition and ensure she was comfortable. During one of her shifts, she noted the patient to be more alert. Riley continued to assess the patient and asked about end of life preferences, and explained she was receiving hospice care; it was at this time that the patient told Riley “I don’t want to die”. Riley immediately reached out to the hospice team, the doctor, and our care manager, to discuss the patient’s improved mental state, including her repeatedly expressing she did not want to die. This led to lab tests being performed and ultimately the patient switching from hospice to inpatient as a full code.

To say Riley went above and beyond is an understatement. She continued to assess the patient’s status and advocate for her. If it were not for Riley’s continued efforts, the patient would have stayed in hospice and not received the treatments she needed to try to survive. The patient, family, and our team are so very thankful for Riley’s care. She is a true DAISY Nurse.

My dad was in the hospital for about 7 days. Riley was often there during his stay. She was always good to him while I was there and helped me with my dad. After dad’s second surgery, Riley, in those moments prior to his passing, she and her co-worker helped make the entire family comfortable and at ease. Thank you for making a life milestone calm and peaceful.

It was a Monday and it had to be the Mondayest Monday that ever Mondayed. But Riley maintained herself and provided the utmost kindness, compassion, and excellent care to her patients without complaining. She advocated with passion and consistency to her patients and families. Riley seems beyond sincere when she talks to her patients. She shows professionalism, takes responsibility, and shows awareness of ethics and values. She lives the Ascension Mission, Vision, Values and has wisdom, dedication, and integrity of an Extraordinary Nurse.

A Nurse's Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me strength to face the day ahead. Dear Lord, please give me courage as I approach each hurting bed. Dear Lord, please give me wisdom with every word I speak. Dear Lord, please give me patience as I comfort the sick and weak. Dear Lord, please give me assurance as the day slips into night. That I have done the best I can. That I have done what’s right. Nurses are God’s angels here on Earth. That prayer was the Lord working through Riley as she cared for her patients. Thank you and continue to do what you were called to do, care.
