Riley Telfer, BSN
I would like to nominate Riley for a DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional compassion, professionalism, and presence she demonstrated during a shift I had the privilege to observe in the NICU.
Riley exemplified what it truly means to provide patient- and family-centered care. During a particularly demanding moment in the shift, both of her patients’ mothers arrived at the bedside at the same time, each seeking updates and support. Both mothers were understandably emotional, and both required the use of interpreters to effectively communicate.
Despite the complexity and intensity of this situation, Riley approached each interaction with remarkable calm, empathy, and intention. She ensured that both mothers received thorough, thoughtful updates about their babies’ care, taking the time to answer questions, acknowledge emotions, and create space for understanding. She seamlessly incorporated interpreter services into each conversation, making sure communication was clear, respectful, and inclusive.
What stood out most was her ability to balance these emotionally charged interactions without ever appearing rushed or overwhelmed. Even with multiple competing priorities, Riley remained fully present with each family, demonstrating a level of compassion and composure that is truly extraordinary.
As someone with a background in adult critical care, I found her approach especially impactful. The level of emotional intelligence, patience, and family-centered focus she displayed is something that deeply resonated with me and is not always easy to achieve in high-acuity environments.
Riley’s care extended far beyond the clinical needs of her patients—she cared for the entire family unit with grace and authenticity. She is an incredible advocate for her patients and their families, and she represents the very best of nursing.
